On Tuesday, March 23rd the Chandler Prep Titans hosted the Arizona Lutheran Coyotes at Shawnee Park and came away with the decisive win. The game was over in four and a half innings due to the AIA Softball Mercy Rule, the Titans winning 12-1.

Opposing pitcher, senior Zoie Trevino, along with her catcher, senior Kyla Pedersen, faced 27 batters in four innings and had a rough night with several passed balls and wild pitches. That combined with the speed and agility of the Titan’s baserunners was the reason for 18 of the 22 stolen bases for Chandler Prep including six passed ball stolen bases for runs.

The Titans performed remarkably well at the plate going through their full rotation in both the third and the fourth innings. Junior Lois Brodnik, third baseman for four innings and pitcher for one, stood out with long line drives off of the first or second pitch resulting in two doubles and a single. Brodnik and second baseman, freshman Leighan Petri, both reached base in every plate appearance. Although he no doubt admires his team’s skill, Coach Raul Guadian for the Titans thinks their biggest strength actually lies outside of their abilities on the field.

I think the comradery is really strong. I think they have a really good personality as a whole. They really bonded well over the off-season practices and I think that really showed today. I mean, they really believe in one another and have a lot of fun with each other, and I think that kind of drove them to the win today.

Pitcher for Chandler Prep in the first four innings, junior Isabella Guadian, faced 20 batters and collected seven strikeouts against only two walks. Along with her catcher, junior Emily Curran, they were formidable obstacles for the Coyotes. Guadian, aided greatly by the infielders, allowed only two hits in the first inning and shut down the offense for the remainder of her time on the mound, including a perfect fourth inning. Brodnik struck out the first batter she saw in the fifth and two well-executed plays by the Titan infielders did the rest.
