Thunderbird scored 24 straight points to defeat Amphitheater 24-7 in a rare Monday Night game in Tucson with the game moved from last Friday due to threats directed at the teams on social media.

Thunderbird moved to 2-1 on the year with Flagstaff (3-0) visiting on Friday on what became a very short week for the Titans. The Titans did not schedule a bye week this year but Amphitheater (2-1) will benefit from a week off before hosting Marcos de Niza (2-1) on Friday, Oct. 1.

The Panther defense came up big in the game, limiting the Titans to 50 yards rushing and only 121 yards passing, but six turnovers and numerous turnovers on downs kept the team off the scoreboard.

Amphitheater scored first on a 32-yard pass from Carlos Ybarra to Nathaniel Carissimi with 3:44 left in the first quarter but it was all Thunderbird from there. Carter Squires hit Derek Carter from 19 yards out to tie the game up 7-7 with 1:07 left in the opening quarter and then Squires drove in from 1-yard out with 10:54 left in the half to put the Titans up for good, 14-7.

“I'm just thankful we have a lot of talent around us. We have a lot of key guys that have stepped up,” Squires said. “Our running back, Jordan Lahusky tore his ACL so it's been really tough on our team.”

Lahusky led the team with 202 yards rushing and four TDs prior to his injury and he was also a leader as a receiver.

Omar Granados connected on a 34-yard field goal to put the Titans up 17-7 with 7:40 left in the first half and the score stayed that way until Squires hit Carter again with 7:00 left in the game for the 24-7 win. The teams went back and forth for almost 25 minutes in between without scoring and the Titans limited Kiko Trejo to 86 yards rushing on 14 tries and Ybarra finished with 105 yards passing (5-13) with one TD and three interceptions. Brian Costa came up with two interceptions for the Titans and Nate Godoy had the other one.

“Well, we had all the momentum going in at halftime because we scored a couple of times and we just wanted to ride it,” Squires explained. “We had a couple of things that just didn't go well for us and we were just trying to bounce it back from it and luckily we came out in the end with it.”

Squires went 9-22 for 121 yards with two TDs passing and one TD rushing.
