Marana junior Albert Broussard singled up the middle to drive in two runs in the top of the sixth inning to help the Tigers defeat Salpointe 2-1 in a late game Monday night at the 14th Annual Lancer Baseball Classic held at the Reid Park Annex Complex.

The two teams battled back and forth through four and a half scoreless inning mainly due to the control of Salpointe pitcher Robert Lopez who finished with 11 strikeouts and only one walk in six innings of work and the ability of Concordia University commit Shea Prahl to pick up an out when needed.

Lopez scattered three hits, including a leadoff double from Gunner Giele to start the game, but he induced several ground balls to escape any harm until senior Owen Guest reached on an error with one out in the bottom of the fifth. Roma Basurto followed with a sacrifice bunt that was misplayed to put two runners on and then Guest and Basurto advanced to scoring positions on a double steal and Giele brought in Guest on a groundout to put Salpointe up 1-0. An attempted steal at home ended the inning for the Lancers.

The Tigers started off the top of the sixth with a single from Landon Lawler and then Kenny Rhein reached on an error on his bunt attempt to put two on. Prahl reached on a fielder’s choice and Arizona commit Mason White threw out Lawler at home on the play. Broussard came up with two outs and he delivered to put Marana up 2-1.

White gave the Lancers hope with a leadoff single in the bottom of the sixth and then Cody Raetzman walked to put two on and then Mauro Acuna was hit-by-pitch one out later to load the bases with one out. Prahl picked up a strikeout and he induced his final groundball to end the inning with the bases loaded.

Prahl finished with three strikeouts but two of them came in the sixth inning to preserve his win. Nick Soria saw action in the seventh for the Lancers and Luke Moyle came on the bottom of the seventh but the game was called with one out and no one on for Salpointe due to the time limit constraints.

Lawler, Prahl, Broussard and Moyle picked up hits for the Tigers and Raetzman, White, Geile, and Guest collected hits for the Lancers.

Marana is now 3-4 overall and 2-4 in power ranking games and the Tigers will face Chino Valley on Tuesday and Salpointe (3-2, 4-7) will face Rio Rico. Rio Rico beat Chino Valley 20-0 on Monday.
