The Titans of Chandler Prep have been dominating the softball diamond, with a 5-1 overall record, their only loss being a 10-11 loss to 3A competitors, AZ College Prep. Friday, April 1st, was no exception. After the game, Assistant Coach Delsante reflected on the success of her team thus far in the season.
“It’s been really fun with all the girls so far, especially with such a strong team this year. It just makes the game a lot more fun when the girls are gelling together and really playing off of each other’s strengths.”
Coming off of a huge 20-1 victory against region competitors, Sequoia Pathway, the Titans again defended their home field against the Eagles from NFL Yet HS. The Titans scored 11 runs in the first inning, and after four-and-a-half innings of play, the game was mercy ruled, Chandler Prep winning 23-7.
Offensively, Chandler Prep has players appearing in the 2A top ten for slugging, on base percentage, and batting average. Senior Emily Curran appears in the top eight for all three. Despite the numerous wild pitches from the Eagles’ mound, Curran took every chance to swing, leading the Titans offensively with two doubles, a single, two RBI’s and three runs.
The Eagles only sent one pitcher to the mound on Friday. She gave up 20 walks and sent five players to first after a hit by pitch. She struck no one out. The catcher for the Eagles however was a necessary and skilled backstop for the more inexperienced pitching, only allowing Titans to take bases on a passed ball a few times.
Pitching for Chandler Prep was freshman Kyra Tucker who, along with Curran, scored three runs and also hit a triple in the bottom of the third. Defensively, she struck out six batters in her three innings. Sophomore Leighan Petri pitched the final two innings of the game, striking out three batters and giving up no hits. Even with senior pitcher Lois Brodnik out due to injury and senior pitcher Isa Guadian fielding perfectly at shortstop for Friday’s game, Brodnik is more than optimistic about the pitching success of the team:
“I think that both Kyra and Leighan pitched great tonight. They were able to get outs quickly which allowed us to dominate offensively. I look forward to seeing what they can do in the circle, along with Isa Guadian. While I wish I could be out there playing, I am excited to see what this team can do especially as we get closer to state.”
The Eagles had an impressive third inning, with four hits and five runs, but with two strike-outs and a caught-stealing play at second, the Titans were able to return to the plate to further cement their lead with a four hit, seven run inning in the bottom of the third.
The Chandler Prep Titans play their next home game against the Trivium Prep Knights at 6:00pm on April 8th. Titan Up.
