Gracie McGovern and Kevin Chor lead after round one

Defending state champion Scottsdale Prep has a commanding even-par round of 292 to 313 lead over Northland Prep at the Division III state golf tournament taking place at the Omni Tucson National Catalina Course in Tucson. Northland Prep took 13th last year.

Scottsdale Christian is in third place with a score of 321 and Phoenix Country Day shot a 322. Scottsdale Christian took eight last year and Phoenix Country Day came in seventh.

Individually, Scottsdale Christian sophomore Gracie McGovern shot a 2-under-par 71 as did AZ College Prep junior Kevin Chor. Chor shot a birdie to go 2-under on the 15th but McGovern had a double-bogey on the 17th to fall back to 1-under but a difficult birdie on the 18th brought her back to 2-under for the day.

Scottsdale Prep senior Talia Gutman and sophomore Ty Pennypacker both came in with a 1-under 72. Gutman lost a shot with a bogey on the 18th and Pennypacker fell back with a bogey on the 13th. Defending state champion Adam Miller of Scottsdale Prep came in with a 73 as did Phoenix Christian freshman JJ Brigowatz.

The final round will tee off at 8 a.m.
