Mountain View pitcher Val Kaff is, as coach Joe Goodman says, dealing.

Kaff pitcher Mountain View to the championship bracket of Saturday's Desert Mountain Softball Invitational winning three games and pitching scoreless relief in the Toros pre-bracket play loss to Sahuaro.

How well did Kaff do? A 3-0 record, 24 innings pitched, one run, eight hits allowed, seven walks and a whopping 52 strikeouts. Kaff tossed a fie-inning no-hitter in the Toros 10-0 tourney win over Desert Vista and threw five innings of no-hit relief at vs. Sahuaro.

Mountain View managed to get the No. 7 seed among the championship bracket's eight teams and draws No. 2 seed Horizon, which faced arguably the toughest schedule of the eight qualifiers facing three of them -- Basha, Canyon del Oro and Sahuaro.

Kaff's success doesn't end with the tournament. For the season she is 9-3 with a 1.49 earned-run average. In 84 2/3 innings she's walked 17 and fanned 141. The team she hasn't solved is Desert Ridge, which has beaten her twice and accounted for 11 of the 18 earned runs she's given up on the season.

Kaff will be tested Saturday by the likes of Horizon, Basha or Canyon del Oro and perhaps Red Mountain should the Toros get to the title game. It's likely as long as they win Saturday, she'll continue to pitch. But even if she falters once, she's been fun to watch pounding the strike zone with an assortment of pitches that often keeps hitters off balance.
