Phoenix Country Day’s youngsters grew up quickly.

It lost some firepower after last year’s 2A championship run, and with three freshmen and three sophomores starting, 2022 looked like a rebuilding year. But the young Eagles had other plans.

Phoenix Country Day developed into a 2A champion once again after defeating St. Johns 17-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-18 Saturday at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

After the nerves dissipated, Phoenix Country Day sophomore Quincy Rodin and freshman setter Josie Robinson (46 assists) immediately took over when the second game started. From there on, there was no stopping them.

Rodin had nine kills in the second game and finished the match with 32 kills in 78 attempts (.308), mostly from the outside and back row.

“They stepped up to the plate, worked really hard and ended up pulling it out,” said coach Kat Glaeseman about her Phoenix Country Day program.

For 10th seeded St. Johns (23-5), it advanced to the final after defeating three higher seeded team. Senior captain Olivia Wiltbanck led St. Johns with 21 kills in 45 attempts (.422).

With almost every starter returning next year, the ring chasing isn’t over.

“The job is not done yet,” Rodin said.
