Senior middle blocker Melanie Selamu began attending Phoenix Christian's middle school as a seventh grader, then played volleyball for three years. 

Her senior year has exceeded her expectations. 

“This is the best team I've ever been on. I have so much fun with them.” Selamu said. 

Being a team captain, her confidence and leadership skills have grown immensely. 

“My coach says I'm a natural encourager,” Selamu explained. “I do my best to keep everyone's energy up. Reassuring them and making sure they are in the right mindset.”

Her senior teammate Berenice Fajardo shared her relationship with Selamu. 

“This year we’ve gotten so close,” Fajardo said. “Since I'm a setter and she's a middle, we just have that bond.”

Selamu and Fajardo explained how the team's bond strengthens their performance skills. 

“In past seasons there have been cliques, this year we are switching it up,” Fajardo said. “The seniors and captains want to leave the team with a good attitude and mentality.” 

Selamu has been a part of the student body at Phoenix Christian for three years and is now the vice president. Her leadership skills have changed the way she performs on the court.

“Being in the student body and talking in front of the whole school has built my confidence,” Selamu said. “Confidence affects how you play volleyball.” 

Another senior teammate Lily Payan concurs.

“Melanie has grown extremely as a player,” Payan said. “I think last season took a toll on her because of the toxic environment with some of the players, but this year now that she's captain, it's more fun for her. She makes it fun for everyone.”

When reflecting on her time at Phoenix Christian, Selamu said it's going to be hard to say goodbye.

“I feel like I have a family here,” Selamu said. “I'm not ready for it to end.”

Selamu's post-grad plans are to attend a university, and she hopes to continue her volleyball career. 

“I want to keep playing because I'm passionate about it,” Selamu said. “If there's one thing I could do for the rest of my life it would be to play volleyball.” 

Going into next season, Selamu's advice to the team is to stay confident. “Don't be scared, make sure you're trusting each other,” Selamu said. “Have fun because you never know when it could end.”
