Red Mountain is no stranger to softball success, but the way the Mountain Lions are winning games this season is a bit of a novelty, even for long time coach Rich Hamilton.

"As long as I've been here we've always focused on defense and pitching because that's how you win games," Hamilton said after the tenth game of the season. "This year we've kind of switched the focus a little bit and emphasizing the offensive, and the kids have really bought into that."

Tuesday night, Red Mountain showcased its power from the plate and the mound during a 10-0 win over visiting Hamilton in a 6A non-region contest between two of the state's best teams.

Red Mountain (9-1) got homeruns from Sophia Hutchison, Sarah Misner and Payton Westra, while junior Kendall Cochran was dominant on the mound, striking out 11 batters.

"Kendall's been amazing going on three years now," Hamilton said of the Utah St. bound pitcher. "Every time there was a big pitch that came up tonight, she won that pitch. And that's a big deal against a good team like Hamilton."

Westra drove in three runs, while Misner added four RBI's.

For the Huskies (8-4), it was the first loss of the year to an Arizona team.

Hutchison got the Mountain Lions on the board first with a solo homerun to left field in the third inning. Later in the inning, Misner drove in Westra from third base with a sacrifice fly to left field for the 2-0 lead.

Red Mountain blew the floodgates open in the fourth inning with six runs. Kassidy Lopez, Hutchison and Westra drove in runs to give the Lions a 5-0 cushion. Then, with two runners still on base, Misner smashed a homerun over the left field fence, scoring Westra and Cochran for the 8-0 lead.

After Cochran struck out three more Hamilton batters in the top of the sixth, Westra ended the game with a two-run blast to left field. The 10-0 lead ended the game one inning early.

Isabella Clapp and Rylie Ellis-Noriega had base hits for Hamilton.
