PAGE — Quarterback Joseph Benally threw six touchdown passes to lead Page past Chino Valley in a 47-20 win to open the season Friday night.
The junior signal caller was 22 of 36 for 239 yards in the home opener for the Sand Devils (1-0, 0-0 3A North), which took a 20-8 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.
Benally threw 18 touchdown passes in nine games a season ago.
Tyree Stingley caught six passes for 89 yards and three scores as Benally's top target Friday night against the Cougars (0-1, 0-0 3A West).
Page heads to Holbrook on Friday, Aug. 30. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
RIVER VALLEY 41, YUMA 14
MOHAVE VALLEY — Mickey Smith threw for three touchdowns, Jayden Plotkin ran for two more and River Valley opened their season with a 41-14 win over Yuma on Friday night.
Plotkin ran for 179 yards on 20 carries against a Criminals team that surrendered 34 points before managing a score of their own.
Peyton Boice, Hunter Koehler and Shane Steineck each caught a touchdown pass from Smith, who was 4 of 10 for 100 yards passing.
River Valley (1-0, 0-0 3A West) visits Dystart (0-1, 0-0 3A Metro West) on Friday, Aug. 30, 7 p.m.
MOHAVE 34, SLAM (NV) 23
BULLHEAD CITY — Despite surrendering 129 yards on 24 carries and a touchdown by Damien Nevil, 3A football favorite Mohave was able to hold on for a 34-23 win over SLAM (NV) on Friday night.
SLAM quarterback Alaijah Young completed 17 of 24 passes for 178 yards and a touchdown, but threw two interceptions agaist a stout Thunderbirds defense.
Mohave (1-0, 0-0 3A West) faces another stiff test against 3A state runner up Paradise Honors on Friday, Aug. 30. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
