PRESCOTT — Quarterback Uriah Tenette seems to find ways to help his team win every week, whether it’s with his arm, his legs or his defensive prowess at safety for the Badgers.

But Friday night was different.

If there ever was a coming out party for the entire realm of high school football in the state of Arizona to pay attention to, Tenette’s effort against the Coyotes was a thing to behold.

The senior signal caller had six total touchdowns, three in the air, two on the ground and a 105-yard interception return for a touchdown that put the game away late in the fourth quarter, sending his Prescott football club to its third straight win with a 40-28 victory over previously undefeated Combs.

Not bad for a kid who played wide receiver a season ago and took his first snaps as a varsity starting quarterback just four weeks ago.

“I’m the leader of this team, so I have to use all of my athletic ability to help our team win this game,” Tenette said. “Getting that 105-yard Pic-6, that was big. We got the win, homecoming night. That was a big win for Prescott tonight.”

And if his night couldn’t get any better, the senior was named Homecoming king at halftime.

When asked about the Pic-6, which is still being confirmed as a school record, Tenette said he knew quickly that it might be a special play.

“When I knew no one was in front of me, I knew no one was going to catch me,” Tenette said.

Rewind to the first quarter, Tenette recorded his first of two interceptions on the night, then proceeded to score on a 28-yard quarterback scramble play to give the Badgers a 7-0 lead.

Combs answered quickly with an Izaak Jeffcoat 1-yard touchdown run, the first of four he would score, all of which would come inside the 5 yard line.

Over the next three possessions offensively for the Badgers (4-1, 0-0 4A Grand Canyon), Tenette would throw touchdown passes to Johann Gundermann (44 yards), Josiah Peoples (27 yards) and Gundermann again (46 yards) to take a 27-6 lead with 4 minutes to play in the first half and they never looked back.

“Simply put, he’s one of the best players in the state on both sides, offense and defense. I don’t know what else to say, he’s unbelievable. Chandler, anywhere, he’s one of the best players in the state, anywhere,” longtime Prescott head coach Cody Collett said. “We’ve had some people looking at him for football, obviously he’s got some offers in basketball, he’s a Division I football player, there’s no question in my mind about it.”

STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE

Ignoring La Joya’s 0-5 mark, the Badgers’ opponent win-loss record after Friday night’s results across the state is a stunning 17-3, meaning Prescott could find themselves as a Top 5 team in the 4A conference when the AIA releases its initial power point rankings Oct. 8.

“We’ve played a lot of really good teams, we’ve had a really brutal schedule. I think this non-league schedule has prepared us,” Collett said. “We’re definitely a little bit beat up because we’ve played some physical football games, but our mindset was the same as it is every week. We try to limit our mistakes, do what we can to try and create some explosive plays and be able to win the football game.”

When asked about his defense allowing 28 points to a team that despite being 4-0, had an opponent win-loss record coming in at just 3-14, Collett said his defense typically is a “bend and don’t break” kind of unit.

“I think that’s how we were tonight. I don’t know what the total yardage was tonight, but that’s OK. We’ve stiffened when we needed to,” Collett said. “We’re fairly young on defense, so I think those guys will continue to get better.”
