GILBERT -- Valley Vista was unable to bring enough effort to the match on Wednesday as they were swept by, Perry 25-12 , 25-21, 25-12.

The Pumas’ (17-14, 1-2) strong front row made it hard for the Monsoon to make use of the points they earned off of errors.

“I think the effort wasn't there from everyone,” senior outside hitter Brynn Golba said. “I think there could have been a better outcome if effort was put in by everybody the whole game. Overall, I think it’s just a bump in the road. We gotta go to the next game and play better.”

Golba was a spot of consistency for the Monsoon (12-8, 4-0), ending the match with eight kills. Seniors Isabella Brewer and Marielle Ramos were the only other members of the team to record kills in the match. Brewer ended the night with five kills and a block, while Ramos had six kills.

“We can’t be lackadaisical about what we do,” Valley Vista coach David Chavez said. “I’m still seeing a little bit of laziness here and there. And as we are going forward, it’s unacceptable. We’ve got seven seniors and we need to be better. The seniors don’t deserve that.”

The seniors on the other side of the court brought their all, recording 34 of the team’s 43 kills. Middle blocker Kenna Cogill had 16 of the kills.

“It was really good for us to be able to come out and get everybody in,” Perry assistant coach Noel Wolman said. “We got everybody in, which is always great and everybody did their role. Games like tonight are nice little resets.”

The second set of the match, which ended 25-21, was the highlight for the Monsoon, giving them more motivation going into the rest of the match. Going point for point for most of the set showed the team there was a chance for the rest of the night.

“The motivation after the second game, having a closer game, helped us come together and be like ‘OK, we have a chance’,” Brewer said. “We got really close in the end. I think that helped us get that energy up.”

Valley Vista (12-8, 4-0) will host Mountain Ridge (13-9, 1-4) in a non-region match on  Oct. 21 at 6 p.m.
