In an error-riddled game, Cortez High School lost 66-34 at home to Camp Verde Friday night. Camp Verde senior wide receiver Jordan Fullmer scored four touchdowns, and Cortez’s Michael and Jamerrius Anthony combined for five touchdowns.
Despite the Anthony brothers' efforts, Cortez’s five turnovers gave Camp Verde extra chances to pull ahead.
“They're a prolific scoring team,” Cortez coach Daniel Hopper said. “I like to think we also have that capability, but when we've got five turnovers, we give them five extra possessions doing it.”
Cortez running back Michael Anthony rushed for 154 yards. Throughout the game, he connected with his brother, sophomore quarterback Jamerrius Anthony, to create opportunities for the Colts.
Jamerrius Anthony rushed for 109 yards, bouncing back from one sack and two fumbles during the game.
Fullmer scored a touchdown in the first quarter at 10:25 on the clock. In his first season playing football, Fullmer totaled 134 receiving yards.
“We knew it was coming, but felt like we had it, but we didn't have it,” Michael Anthony said. “It's all mentality. We need to work on our mentality, and on the field, we need to attack the ball.”
Camp Verde’s junior kicker, Logan Ayotte, kicked a 17-yard field goal with 4:35 on the clock, carrying a 9-0 lead into the second quarter.
Michael Anthony scored a 42-yard touchdown in the second quarter for the Colts with 11:23 on the clock. After a failed two-point conversion, Cortez trailed 9-6.
Seconds after Cortez’s touchdown, Camp Verde’s Fullmer scored a 48-yard touchdown and a successful PAT to give the Cowboys a 16-6 lead.
After a series of incomplete passes from Cowboys quarterback Brayden Walsworth in two separate offensive drives, Camp Verde running back Thaine D Cook scored on a 16-yard run with 3:15 on the clock.
“Our offense has been trying to get rolling, and that's what we like to do: move fast, run a lot of plays, and try to put a lot of points on the board,” Camp Verde coach Aaron Gronwald said. “It's kind of what we expected, hoping not to give up as many points.”
After halftime, Cortez capitalized after a fumble as Jamerrius Anthony scored a 65-yard touchdown with 8:44 on the clock to cut the Cowboys’ lead to 23-13.
In a similar response to the second quarter, just 20 seconds after Cortez’s touchdown, Camp Verde’s Marco Huerta returned a kick 95 yards for a touchdown at 8:29, making it 30-13.
The Cowboys recovered a fumble by Jamerrius Anthony and put Camp Verde back on offense. With 6:31 on the clock and on the fourth down in the Colts’ red zone, Hunter Matthew scored another touchdown for the Cowboys. After a failed PAT, they still led 36-13.
Cortez responded in a similar fashion by pushing at Camp Verde’s red zone, resulting in a 3-yard touchdown by Jamerrius Anthony with 1:54 left on the clock. The Colts trailed 36-20.
“We were down multiple scores but were still able to be effective with our run game,” Hopper said. “As evident from the big runs, that helps set up some of our quick passing game.”
Fullmer kicked off the fourth quarter by scoring a 10-yard touchdown and Matthew's two-point conversion to give the Cowboys a 44-20 lead with 11:53 on the clock.
At 7:35, Walsworth threw a touchdown pass to offensive lineman Gunner Selting, who also completed the two-point conversion, as the Cowboys extended their lead to 52-20.
The Colts rallied back as Michael Anthony scored an 80-yard touchdown and a two-point conversion from Andre Shepard at 7:19 on the clock. The Colts still trailed 52-28.
Camp Verde wide receiver Joshua Valencia scored a 4-yard touchdown with 5:13 on the clock. The Cowboys maintained the 58-28 lead after a failed two-point conversion.
With 4:54 left in the game, Jamerrius Anthony scored a 38-yard touchdown, closing the gap in the score to 58-34. Despite efforts from Cortez, Fullmer scored a 10-yard touchdown with 3:52 left in the game for Camp Verde.
