American Heritage captures inaugural MaxPreps Cup
July 18, 2012 by MaxPreps, AZPreps365
Using a formula designed to determine the top prep programs in the country, the MaxPreps Cup recognizes the Top 25 high school programs in the nation as well as the top overall program in each state, the top boys and girls programs and the top large school, medium school and small school programs.
American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) took home honors in three of those categories, as its 1,031 points easily outdistanced Summit (Bend, Ore.), which finished a remarkable season in its own right with 929 points. The Patriots are also the top medium schools program (schools with enrollment between 1,000 and 2,000 students) and they have the top female sports program with 517 points.
Along with the state titles in baseball, softball and boys and girls track, the Patriots also won a state championship in boys soccer and finished second in boys and girls golf, girls swimming and girls soccer. The Patriots were also nationally ranked in baseball and boys and girls track.
Summit racked up 10 state championships in Oregon, winning titles in boys and girls track, boys and girls swimming, boys and girls cross country, girls volleyball, girls golf and boys and girls tennis.
Carmel finished in third place overall but is recognized as the top large school program in the country. The Greyhounds won official state championships in girls swimming, boys swimming, girls cross country, girls soccer, boys basketball, football and boys tennis.
Bishop England (Charleston, S.C.) earns the title of top small schools program. The Battling Bishops won state championships in boys track, boys cross country, girls basketball, football, girls volleyball and girls tennis. They also finished second in boys golf. Bishop England also ranks No. 9 on the overall Top 25 list.
Christian Brothers Academy (Lincroft, N.J.) is the top boys sports program. The Colts captured group titles in track, swimming, and golf and finished second in wrestling, soccer and tennis.
The formula is based on a team placing first or second in the state finals of a sport. Points are weighted based on the size of the playoff enrollment division, the size of state and the type of sport. Points are also awarded for inclusion in the final national rankings for that sport. Only the following sports were counted toward the MaxPreps Cup: football, boys/girls volleyball, boys/girls basketball, boys/girls swimming, boys/girls soccer, boys/girls tennis, boys/girls golf, boys/girls cross country, boys/girls track, wrestling, softball, boys/girls lacrosse. The sport must be sanctioned to be counted. Club sports were not included.
Following are the Top 25 programs with their point totals based on the MaxPreps formula.
