Salpointe senior Leo Gutierrez thought he had the 4A state record for career goals at 137 in early January but a deeper dive into the AIA archives revealed that former Pinnacle standout Kyle Ciliento of Pinnacle finished his high school career in 2008 with 160 career goals. Could Gutierrez score two dozen goals in a month to set the record? Yes, and then some.

Over the next 11 matches, Gutierrez scored 28 goals, including four against Tolleson in the first round of the Open Division Wednesday night, to get a firm hold on the new record regardless of division at 165 career goals. He also set the 4A record at 54 in a season and he has 25 hat tricks to his name with at least two matches left in his career.

No. 8 4A Salpointe will host No. 9 6A Sunnyside in the second round of the Open Division on Friday, Feb. 14. A win for either team means a permanent spot in the Open Division but a loss means a place in their respective conference tournaments on Wednesday, Feb. 19.
