Benjamin Franklin completes return to the top of 3A

Benjamin Franklin played without its second leading scorer in Saturday’s 3A championship match.
Facing the high scoring, top-seeded Seton Catholic Sentinels without Jaspyr Rocha, recovering from a burst appendix, didn’t rattle the Chargers, however.
It inspired her teammates, who wore Rocha’s No. 11 on wrist bands, to victory.
Benjamin Franklin still had an ace in its back pocket, Delin Peterson, and a defense that held Seton Catholic scoreless for the first time this season during its 2-0 triumph Saturday at Mountain Pointe High.

The hard working Peterson scored in each half in her final high school match, finishing this season with a whopping 46 goals for 19-1-1 Benjamin Franklin. The senior missed last year with an ACL injury, when Benjamin Franklin lost in the state quarterfinals in PK’s.
“It’s definitely been a good season to come back to,” Peterson said. “The team is just so amazing. It was just a really good experience to come back, and this just adds like the cherry on top.”
Two years ago, Peterson’s two goals and an assist allowed Benjamin Franklin to claim its first state championship in any sport.
Saturday’s reunion was a rematch of an early season matchup, which Benjamin Franklin won 4-3. It was also the only time that Seton Catholic (17-3) and Benjamin Franklin allowed an opponent to score more than two goals in a game this season.
This time, Benjamin Franklin’s defense kept its opponent’s attackers in check. Emerson Stoft (42 goals) did have her chances, especially in the first half, in the middle attacking third while quarterbacking Seton Catholic’s offense.

Seton Catholic freshman wing Jordan Dahl also was hard to keep up with, and Seton Catholic did hit the crossbar twice in the match. But that’s as close as it got against a Benjamin Franklin defense that just didn’t budge.
The Chargers allowed only five goals in their final 17 matches this season. In charge of that unit was multi sport star Madeline Falls, who earned her 12th shutout of her campaign.

“It’s amazing,” said the goalkeeper, who also started during her program’s title win two years ago. “I don’t know how to describe it. I’m beyond ecstatic, happy and so proud of my teammates. They deserve this.”
