The Sunnyside boys held off Liberty for the fifth year in a row, this time 244.5 to 178.5, to capture the 38th team championship in program history and the eighth in a row dating back to 2018. This is also Blue Devil head coach Anthony Leon’s ninth state championship in 12 years.

The Blue Devils had 11 athletes make the podium, led by a pair of seniors in Sergio Vega (144) and Carlos Stanton (150), who finished with four individual title each. Fellow senior Nicholas Pena (165) ended his career with three championships and junior Zayne Candelaria (285) picked up his second championship.

The Sunnyside girls beat Liberty 142 to 85 to win the first state championship in program history. Liberty beat Sunnyside in 2023 and 2024. Remarkably, the Blue Devils won the team championship without an individual champion.

Pueblo sophomore Elizabeth Valenzuela Smith collected her second championship after being the first wrestler to become a third generation champion. Her father, Josiah Smith, won a state championship in 1998 and her grandfather, Orlando Smith, won in 1974 and 1975.

Her brother, Jozeph, won the Division II boy’s 157 championship to become the second athlete to record a third generation championship. The siblings are also the third set of boy/girl siblings to win individual championships.

Khel and Khyla Lipumano of Yuma Catholic did it in 2024 and Cannon and Kennedy Farrar of Gila Ridge joined the Smith siblings this year. Kennedy Farrar is also a two-time champion.
