Perry defeats Kofa, advances to third straight 6A title match

Perry is on the verge of its third 6A championship in as many years. It may not be in the Open bracket as they'd like, but considering their topsy-turvy regular season and a host of new starters, the Pumas 6A run is quite impressive.
Wednesday night Perry took down visiting Yuma Kofa, 4-1 in a semifinal contest. The No. 2 Pumas (13-9-) controlled No. 3 Kofa (16-5-2) with a stingy defense and some crafty offense. The Kings were shutout until the game's 76tb minute.
Puma got scores from Nick Saveski in the ninth minute, and another from Brody Donovan nearly midway through the first half, slicing the ball through two defenders and out of reach for the goalkeeper.

Jaymis Brown scored in the second half for Perry, giving the Pumas a commanding 4-0 lead.
Perry's third score came right before halftime, when a Kofa defender accidentally ricocheted a corner kick from Donovan just before the half. Officially, Donovan gets credit for the goal. Unofficially, it was a backbreaker for Kofa heading into halftime.
"We're peaking at the right time," Perry coach Jason Berg said. "February is the time you want to be playing your best. I'm really proud of our defense because they made things difficult when Kofa got near the net."
Perry will square off against top-seed Shadow Ridge, which beat Basha in overtime penalty kicks. The title match starts at 1pm at Mesa High School.

Kofa striker Ivan Lopez Escobedo scored late on a streaking goal from just inside the box. Junior Leonel Rodriguez--6A's leading scorer, was unable to connect on a handful of decent kicks.
"I told our kids we played one bad half of soccer," longtime Kofa coach Jamie Nicewander said. "We've struggled all season with converting, especially on corner kicks and throw-ins, and that was the story tonight. Perry had a bit of a size advantage but they played great soccer."
