Hard to imagine pitching a one-hitter and ending up on the losing side. That fate befell No. 1 seed Queen Creek's Aubrey Chavez in Friday's 6A winners softball bracket quarterfinal vs. No.4 Xavier Prep at Mesa High.

The outcome was plausible because her opponent in the circle - Xavier's Angie Falls - also tossed a one-hitter. Xavier and Falls emerged with a 1-0 victory thanks to a fourth-inning run courtesy of speedy leadoff hitter Sariah McNabb.

McNabb, who reached on an error leading off the fourth, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Joie Ramos and continued to third. The throw by second baseman Alessia Velazquez to third was wild and McNabb easily continued home.

With the win Xavier improved to 22-5-4. The Gators next game is a championship bracket semi against No. 6 Pinnacle. That game is set for Wednesday at 7p.m. at Mesa High.

Pinnacle advanced on Friday by besting No. 10 Sandra Day O'Connor, 3-1. Queen Creek saw its 17-game winning streak end - a streak that began March 25.

Queen Creek's next game is Tuesday against either Mountain View or Tucson, who play Saturday morning at 10 at Mesa High.

Falls, who ran her season record to 12-1, allowed a two-out single in the second inning by Queen Creek's Delia Marquez. Falls finished walking five and strucking out 12.

She escaped the sixth innning unscathed after walking the first two batters in the frame. Two of her 12 strikeouts helped escape the jam.

"They have a very tough lineup and to do what she did against them tonight, Angie was phenomenal," Xavier coach Tom Sahhar said standing alongside co-coach Sydnie Sahhar.

Chavez's outing in the circle was equally good. The sophomore right-hander had a no-hitter entering the seventh inning despite trailing 1-0. The no-hitter ended with the Gators Riley McKeever stroking a leadoff single to left.

Chavez walked one and fanned eight.
