The top four seeds have proven worthy of their seed in reaching the final four of the 6A state baseball tournament.
That quartet -- top seed Corona del Sol, No. 2 Hamilton, No. 3 Casteel and No. 4 Red Mountain - were in action against one another on Friday at Mesa's HoHoKam Park.
And wouldn't you know the unbeaten teams in the tourney entering play Friday - #3 Casteel and #4 Red Mountain - were handed their first loss by Hamilton and Corona, respectively. That sets up elimination Saturday with a double header at HoHoKam Park. Hamilton and Casteel play first at 4 p.m. followed at 6:30 by Corona del Sol and Red Mountain.
Here are highlights of Friday's contests:
CORONA DEL SOL 3, RED MOUNTAIN 1: The Aztecs (25-6) received a stellar performance from pitcher Zane Burns in shutting down the Mountain Lions (24-6).
Burns tossed a complete game allowing the run, four hits and walking two. He did not strike out a batter. Jaiden LoRe singled in a run in the third inning and the Aztecs tacked on two unearned insurance runs in the seventh. Those runs scored via RBI doubles by Cooper Clouser and Connor Long. Red Mountain scored its run tying the game 1-all in the fourth thanks to Hagen Wright's RBI single.
HAMILTON 10, CASTEEL 0 (6 innings): Freshman Sammy Garcia pitched a two-hit shutout over six innings leading the Huskies (25-7) over the Colts (21-9). Garcia allowed only three base runners and no more than one in an inning. He did not record a strikeout and walked one.
Hamilton cranked out 13 hits led by Blake Gonzales (2-for-3, 3 RBI and 3 runs scored), Garcia (3-for-4, 2 RBI), Ben Ball (2-for-4, RBI) and Nico Linville (2-for-2, 2 RBI).
