For most high schoolers, a Saturday night in June is the perfect time to relax.

For high school football players with an insatiable appetite for competition, it’s the perfect time to get to work, and that’s what Just Chilly’s Flight Club at Maricopa’s Copper Sky Regional Park is all about.

Of the 32 teams in attendance, Basha stood above the rest. The group hadn’t lost a single 7-on-7 game all summer, and that didn’t change Saturday night.

After winning the Big Man competition, the Bears kept their composure against Chandler, capping the night off with a 27-22 victory in the 7-on-7 finals.

The clock showed just 15 seconds remaining when Basha’s sideline erupted; three-star North Texas commit Brodie Vehrs delivered a laser to Jaden Burrell that put the Bears up by five.

The Wolves needed a miracle in the final seconds, but a dropped pass in the back of the end zone sealed their fate.

“They kind of had our number the first couple of drives, so I knew I had to call something for that last play,” Vehrs said.

“I drew something up. I threw it to Jaden as hard as I could, and he got it. Props to our defense too, that last stand put away the game. Definitely an exciting win for us.”

With less than seven minutes left, Chandler held a 16-7 lead. That’s when Basha’s defense woke up.

Several key deflections brought the momentum over to the Bears’ side, and from there the offense played its part to perfection.

“Obviously, people talk about us, and that’s great,” Basha head coach Chris McDonald said.

“We’re really good on paper right now, but we haven’t even played a game. So it’s just about keeping that mindset and going through that day-to-day process. So far, though, these kids are executing at a very high level, which speaks to them.”

Basha’s Tevita Kale won Big Man MVP after a dominant performance in one-on-ones. Vehrs was named 7-on-7 MVP.

“We want to bring this into the season,” Vehrs said. “I mean, we’ve won this whole summer. We’re going to win during the season too.”
