TEMPE -- The McClintock Chargers failed to contain Horizon Huskies running back Dylan Brush who finished the game with three TDs in another tough loss, 62-3, on Thursday night.
For the Chargers, the second quarter has been the team's Achilles’ heel in all five games this season. Horizon scored 27 points in the second quarter.
“Hats off to Horizon, that's a top 5A team in the state, so give them a ton of credit,” McClintock coach Nick Offenberger said. “We’re banged up right now and that’s fine, we’re just trying to weather the storm.”
The Huskies struck first with a five-play drive to open the game, resulting in a 10-yard TD run by Brush, a freshman, with 9:32 to go in the first quarter. But the Chargers responded with their own seven-play drive, which resulted in a field goal to bring the score to 7-3 with 6:38 remaining in the first quarter.
However, that field goal was the only scoring for the Chargers for the remainder of the game.
The Huskies finished the second quarter on a run, scoring four TDs including a pick-six and a 70-yard rushing TD from Brush, pushing the lead to 41-3 at halftime.
“I feel like after the interception our engine went down and that's what killed us,” McClintock running back CP Parsons said.
Parsons said the team did better with the starting drive of the game in comparison to their last matchup against Westwood, but that their energy needs to be consistent even after falling behind.
Although the offensive line struggled, Parsons managed 83 rushing yards on 25 carries.
Brush was the igniter for the Huskies offense, finishing the game with 120 rushing yards on three carries and three TD’s.
“We know that's a good football team, and they’ve got a new staff that’s come with players that don’t have varsity experience, so our main goal was to come in and get better as a football team,” Huskies coach Tyson Ditmore said.
Ditmore said he felt his team capitalized on running the football and playing good defense.
Offenberger said the team has a good game plan going forward and is excited to get more players eligible by next week.
“We’re not very deep, so getting these kids in, we’ll have a couple of kids that are plug and play,” Offenberger said. “And then we’ll have some depth behind us.”
Offenberger said the Chargers had a tough non-conference schedule, but that they are focusing on making a run in regional play next week.
The Chargers (1-4) will host the Paradise Valley Trojans (3-1) next Thursday at 7 p.m.
The Horizon Huskies (5-0) will host the Notre Dame Prep Saints (2-3) next Friday at 7 p.m.
