PHOENIX -- Senior quarterback Case Vanden Bosch tallied 267 yards in the air, 69 yards on the ground and produced three TDs Friday night as Brophy defeated Red Mountain, 27-10, at home.

“He led us, and that’s the most important thing,” quarterbacks coach Donovan McNabb said. “When you come off of a tough loss like we did last week, it's about how you’re going to retaliate. Being a captain of this team, he showed us why his teammates voted on him.”

Vanden Bosch spread the ball well throughout the game.

Receivers Devin Fitzgerald, Daylen Sharper and Jayson Kubica each surpassed 60 yards receiving. Kubica led the Broncos with 102 yards. Fitzgerald broke away on a screen pass for a 67-yard TD with 8:19 remaining in the game to put Brophy up 20-10. Sharper led all receivers in the first half with 49 yards and finished with 62 on five receptions.

This was Sharper’s first game this season.

“The chemistry’s great,” Sharper said. “It’s great to have complementary receivers going with each other. I love playing with [Devin] and I wouldn’t want to play with anyone else.

“There’s so much improvement with Case, too. He’s had a lot of help from coach McNabb, and it’s crazy how much he’s grown from last year.”

The Broncos opened up the scoring in the first quarter with a 38-yard field goal from junior Jack Carson, capping off a nine-play possession beginning at their own 33.

After a Mountain Lions punt, Brophy scored a TD on their next possession with a 4-yard run from Vanden Bosch capping off a 13-play, 81-yard drive, making the score 10-0.

Junior Ryder Noche intercepted a pass on the second play of the next Mountain Lions possession, putting the Broncos in Red Mountain territory, leading to a 32-yard field goal from Carson with 7:56 left in the first half.

“I was watching a lot of film this week,” Noche said. “I’ve seen that play a bunch of times, so I knew I was going to put myself in that position, and luckily, I made those two plays.”

Noche sealed the game with his second interception with 8:08 left in the fourth, one play after Fitzgerald’s 67-yard TD burst.

Red Mountain did put up a fight, however. After a scoreless first half, the Mountain Lions took advantage of a short field following an 18-yard punt return from Tyreke Cornett, along with a personal foul penalty, letting Red Mountain begin their possession at the Broncos’ 17.

While managing only a field goal from senior Chase Pitzer, to make it 13-3 with 3:15 left in the third, sophomore Gard Liles picked off Vanden Bosch in the end zone on the following possession.

The Mountain Lions then took it 80 yards on nine plays, including 21-yard and 44-yard receptions from junior Airreon Windom, capped off by a 1-yard quarterback sneak from Caleb Joe, putting the score at 13-10 with 10:07 remaining.

Windom finished the game with four receptions for 86 yards.

“We’ve been there so many times,” Red Mountain coach Kyle Enders said. “We know we’re not going to win games in the first half. We have to put it together completely.”

The second-half momentum quickly fizzled for the Mountain Lions though, as Fitzgerald took a third-and-nine screen pass 67 yards for a TD on the following possession, followed by Noche’s second interception and finished off with a 3-yard TD run from Vanden Bosch to end the scoring with 4:06 remaining.

Mountain Lions sophomore running back Darius-Grayson Courts finished with a season-high 95 yards on 12 carries, including a 62-yard burst in the third quarter.

Something Red Mountain fans can look forward to: senior quarterback  Dominic Carmigiano, a transfer from Chandler, is eligible to play in the Mountain Lions’ next game.

“We’re ready to open up this playbook a lot,” Carmigiano said. “Caleb’s done a great job doing what he can with what he’s got, but I am just ready to unleash everything. I’ve been waiting a long time for this one.”

Red Mountain (4-1) is off next week. The Mountain Lions host Desert Ridge (0-5) at 7 p.m. on Oct. 10.
