GLENDALE— Deer Valley’s swim and dive team concluded its home season with a commanding victory on Thursday at Foothills Recreation & Aquatics Center as they swept the Senior Night quad meet.

Both the girls and boys teams took first place. The Deer Valley girls finished with 110  points, followed by Mountain Ridge with 57, Agua Fria with 23 and Goodyear with 0, while the boys tallied 125 points to top Mountain Ridge’s 81, Agua Fria’s 26, and Goodyear’s 14.

The swim meet also served as a celebration for Deer Valley’s seniors, who were honored for their leadership and dedication. They set the tone early with strong relay performances that helped carry the Skyhawks to victory.

Deer Valley senior Isabelle Krumland reflected on the end of her swimming journey.

“It definitely made me feel really sad because after four years of swimming with this team and knowing that this is going to be my last year swimming competitively after 11 years,” Krumland said. “It was very emotional for me, but I was still very happy that I was able to swim with my people.”

Deer Valley coach Shelley Currier said the atmosphere of the meet was sentimental.

“This is just a really great group of seniors,” Currier said. “We work hard to build community and focus on positivity, and I hope they carry that with them for the rest of their lives. We try to help them become good people, not just good swimmers.”

Senior diver Jack Baker extended Deer Valley’s success with a first-place finish in boys diving, a performance that strengthened his confidence heading into regionals and the state championship.

“I'm trying to get my dives better, focus on my cleanliness for them,”  Baker said. “I definitely want to do some upward, bigger dives, more rotations, and more spins.”

There were 25 personal records set at the meet, making the day especially meaningful for Deer Valley’s swimmers, divers, coaches and supporters.

Deer Valley junior Julian Martinez stood out in his first year on the team, earning  “Swimmer of the Meet” honors and setting personal records in three events, including the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:09.44. He said he’s proud to contribute to the team’s success.

“I get in that pool and I'm like, wow, it feels good today,” Martinerz said. “Hitting a new PR always feels good, even if you're just right there to hitting what you want to be, it still feels good regardless.”

With seven athletes qualified for the state championships, Deer Valley’s team closes the season on a high note.

The team now looks ahead to the Best in the West Swimming and Diving Championships (Approved Qualifier) on Oct. 24 at Glendale Community College, hosted by Sunrise Mountain.
