The Marcos de Niza Padres had a fantatsic win in their flag football game and executed on both sides of the ball, showcasing the preparation that has led to their success.
Quarterback Tehani Tongauiha led the Padres’ offense with three passing touchdowns and a steady presence in the pocket. Two of her scoring throws found Angelina Navarro, a two-way standout at wide receiver and linebacker. Tongauiha’s confidence and accuracy helped the Padres strike early and keep control of the game throughout, as they led at half 22-0.
“Just do what we have practiced and prepared for,” Tongauiha said when asked about the team’s performance. “We came in knowing what we had to do and we just executed.”
The Padres’ offense found its rhythm immediately, putting together efficient drives that kept the Titans’ defense on its heels. Tongauiha’s chemistry with Navarro was evident, as the pair connected twice in the end zone, each time extending Marcos de Niza’s lead, energizing the sideline and crowd.
Wide receiver and safety Alaina Tavena added to the offensive explosion with both a rushing and receiving touchdown. Her versatility and ability to find open space helped stretch the lead.
“Our defense studded out again and played great while the offense played great complimentary football to them,” head coach Peter Baez said. “Our offense has been great, but our great defense helps it for sure.”
That defense, which Baez praised, set the tone early, limiting the Titans’ scoring chances. The Padres’ defenders consistently broke up passes and pulled flags of Titans’ players. Navarro, a junior, reflected on what the performance and the season have meant to her as the schedule winds down.
“I’m going to miss my team and teammates from this next year but am ready for the next season as well,” Navarro said. “We’ve worked really hard to get to this point, and I’m proud of how we’ve come together.”
“It has been a great season and I’m glad we showed our talent and what we have worked to become,” Tongauiha said.
The 34–7 victory marked another statement for a Marcos De Niza team that has dominated opponents with a mix of defense and offense.
“This group has been consistent all year,” Baez said. “They play for each other and that shows every time we step on the field that they want to win and care about the game.”
Coach Baez insisted on how these players showed up and competed. They are having fun while doing so and it is obvious to see the excitement of the team.
Just about two weeks ago at the end of practice there was a water balloon fight just to keep the girls engaged and remind them how this is fun, as Baez created the idea to do so. The team loved this and maybe it sparked a fire under this red hot Padres team.
