Colts red hot with 97-45 win against Warriors
January 17, 2026 by Reilly Howard, Buena High School
From the opening tip, the Colts would have full control of the game and never let up. Tempo blistering, defense suffocating, and the outcome decided way before the final horn. Buena (10-2 at this point) was fresh off an authoritative win against Flowing Wells, 59-26, on Tuesday, as they would host the 4-12 Pubelo Warriors in a home region game. They weren’t only looking to extend their five-game win streak this season, but also their amazing 15-game home win streak, dating back to the 24-25 season.
Straight out of the gate, the Colts fired on all cylinders to open up the game, as they would put up 22 points while holding Pueblo to just 7 in the first quarter. Buena’s defense was unmatched and smothering all across the floor, as they would continue to add on to their lead at halftime, going up 49-16. The Colts continued to apply more pressure, offensively and defensively, ultimately getting a blowout 97-45 win. Junior forward Steven Wambach led the way with 16 points on 67% shooting from the field, as Senior forward Thomas Welker wasn’t far behind him, contributing 15 points on 47% shooting from the field as well.
Additional highlights from this game included a Ricardo Brooks behind-the-back dribble into an assist for a Joseph Thomas 3-pointer, and also Steven Wambach, channeling his incredible vision and defense, to rack up an absolutely absurd 8 steals!
Buena’s JV team also dominated their affair against the Warriors, winning 73-50. This win was the result of an all-around effort, with multiple players contributing points. The main catalyst, though, that led the charge against Pubelo was Junior forward Tariq Howard, who put up an astounding 23 points, while also pulling down many rebounds and playing incredible defense.
Buena’s varsity improves to 11-2 on the season, after this “complete win”. Their home win streak has now reached 16 games, as they aim to maintain their success throughout the remainder of the season.
