Ortiz, Childers, Goodwin, Vanover and Demondo Selected for Max Preps/NFCA National H.S. Honors

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – For their impressive efforts during games occurring over April 8-14, Shyleen Ortiz of Goodwin Tech (New Britain, Conn.) High School, Kaylee Childers of Massac County (Metropolis, Ill.) High School, Cara Goodwin of Good Hope (Cullman, Ala.) High School, McKenzie Vanover of Ashland Blazer (Ashland, Ky.) High School and Adrienne Demondo of Peoria (Peoria, Ariz.) High School have been selected as the MaxPreps/NFCA National High School Players of the Week.
EAST REGION: A senior pitcher for Goodwin Tech H.S., Ortiz contributed to her team's efforts from both the plate and circle over the past week, hitting .700 (7-for-10) with seven runs scored, three doubles, a triple and nine RBIs, while also posting a perfect 3-0 pitching mark with a 0.00 ERA and 34 strikeouts over just 15 innings of work. Her finest offensive effort of the week came during a 19-3 (5 inn.) triumph over Wolcott RVT (Conn.) as Ortiz was 5-for-5 at the dish with four tallies, two doubles, a triple and five RBIs. In a 9-2 victory over Wilcox RVT (Conn.), she struck out 15 while permitting just three hits. For the season Ortiz is 5-1 overall with a 1.53 ERA and 55 K's in 32 frames, while batting an even .500 with five doubles and nine RBIs.
NORTH REGION: A senior pitcher/first baseman for the 17-0-1 Patriots, Childers registered a 6-0 mark from the circle with five complete games, a 1.51 ERA and 31 strikeouts over 37 frames, while also hitting .455 (10-for-22) overall with seven runs scored, two doubles, a HR and four RBIs. She hit safely in five of last week's six match-ups, posting 3-for-4 efforts in triumphs over Herrin (Ill.) and Vienna (Ill.) and struck out a season-high-tying nine during a 7-3 victory over Benton (Ill.). On the year Childers is a perfect 15-0 with 80 K's in 93 innings and is hitting an even .500 with six doubles, two triples, two HR's and seven RBIs.
SOUTH REGION: A senior pitcher/infielder for the Raiders, Goodwin was a flawless 4-0 from the circle this past week to go along with 40 strikeouts over 24 innings while hitting .417 (5-for-12) with six runs scored, two HR's and six RBIs. During a 10-0 (5 inn.) victory over West Point (Ala.), she struck out eight in tossing her ninth no-hitter of the 2013 campaign. Overall, Goodwin boasts a 25-4 overall record with a 0.63 ERA and an impressive 285 strikeouts over just 156 innings, while also hitting .379 with 30 RBIs.
SOUTH CENTRAL REGION: A junior infielder, Vanover helped the Tomcats to a 4-0 week by hitting 8-for-14 (.571) with six runs scored, a double, four HR's and 15 RBIs. During a 15-0 win over Ironton (Ohio), she was 2-for-3 at the dish with a two-bagger, a HR and a staggering eight RBIs, while in a 13-0 victory over Fairview (Ky.), she was a perfect 4-for-4 with three tallies, two HR's and three RBIs. For the year Vanover is now batting .395 with 13 runs scored, three doubles, seven HR's and 25 RBIs.
WEST REGION: A junior outfielder/third baseman, Demondo hit a ridiculous .813 (13-for-16) at the dish for the Panthers with 10 runs scored, two doubles, a HR and six RBIs. Included was a 4-for-4 performance with a pair of two-baggers in a 20-0 rout of La Joya Community (Ariz.) and a 4-5 effort with four tallies, a HR and five RBIs during an 18-0 blasting of Copper Canyon (Ariz.). For the season Demondo possesses a .418 average with three doubles, a HR and 16 RBIs.
