Ky Westbrook struck gold for Team USA during the IAAF World Youth Championships this week in Donetsk, Ukraine.
Despite running into a slight headwind, the rising senior from Chandler (Ariz.) won the 100-meter dash in a personal-best 11.33 seconds.
The daughter of former NFL wide receiver Michael Westbrook told MileSplit, "It's the most ready I've ever felt for a race before. It's so amazing. After the race, I started to feel tears bubbling up a little bit. I'm so happy. This is definitely the best thing that has ever happened to me in my life. It really hasn't even sunk in."
Though she just earned third place, Mount Olive (Flanders, N.J.) rising senior Keturah Orji was just as spectacular in the triple jump. Her distance of 44-11 was only three-quarters of an inch off the USA national record set by Californian Brittany Daniels in 2004.
Orji commented, "Everyone was setting PRs, so I was really nervous in the prelims. Then I got out to 44-8 and I was really happy after that. I'm really happy to represent the U.S. well in the triple jump and bring this back home."
Dior Hall, a rising senior from George Washington (Denver), won silver in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 13.01 seconds. The national record is 12.95, but she did break the USA age-18 record of 13.25 which, ironically, was set by her mother, Yolanda Johnson, for the same school in 1986.
