Tennis: Boys & girls D-I singles, doubles semifinals set

Defending Division I girls singles champion and top seed Madison Clarke of Xavier and boys top singles seed James Ponwith of Chaparral won quarterfinal matches Friday at the D-I state tennis championships at Paseo Racquet Club in Glendale. Semifinals and finals are Saturday (May 3) at Paseo.
Ponwith takes on No. 5 seed Daniel Hollands of Mesquite in one semifinal while No. 2 seed Zach Cihlar of Brophy battles unseeded Cameron Krimbill of Desert Mountain. The boys doubles semifinals saw no upsets as No. 1 seed Jeremy Auh-Chase Victor of Desert Mountain advanced to meet No. 5 seed Cade Lortie-Chase Lortie of Red Mountain. The Lortie's knocked off No. 4 seeded brothers team of Ryan Headley-Michael Headley of Pinnacle. No. 2 seed Christian Franco-Michael Cowan of Brophy take on Hamilton's No. 3 seeded Mac Howell-Sam Wong in the other semifinal. The semis begin at 11:30 a.m. with the final and third-place matches following at 2:30 p.m.
In girls tournament action Clarke is set to meet No. 4 seed Chloe Weihs of Centennial in one semi. The other pits No. 2 Madeline Cunningham of Millennium against No. 3 Rebecca Salaway of Chaparral. Two-time defending state doubles champs Maggie Cohen-Scarlet Rush of Xavier, the top seed, face No. 4 Alex Penner-Abby Swartz of Centennial. The other semi matches No. 3 Marissa Gautier-Anamika Deokar of Hamilton against No. 7 Lena Sweiss-Savanah Koss of Xavier. The girls semifinals also commence at 11:30 a.m followed at 2:30 p.m. by final and third-place matches.
