Day 1 of Hoop Hall tourney: AZ goes 2-1
December 18, 2015 by Jose Garcia, AZPreps365
Arizona's attempt at an impressive sweep in the first day of the Hoop Hall West Classic was derailed by St. Anthony.
The New Jersey school opened its season Friday in Scottsdale with a 68-58 victory over Corona del Sol at Chaparral High.
The loss negated Arizona from a 3-0 Hoop Hall start, as Shadow Mountain and Basha opened the day with wins over San Jose Archbishop Mitty and Richmond (Calif.) Salesian 58-55 and 76-42, respectively. Basha held a 35-12 lead in the first half, but Salesian’s pressure defense in the second half helped it climb back.
Basha held on for a 58-55 win, though. Shadow Mountain’s depth was on display in its 76-42 victory over Archbishop Mitty.
Player of the Game JJ Rhymes and teammate Michael Bibby Jr. each scored 19 points for Shadow Mountain.
An Alex Barcello jumper as the first quarter ended knotted Corona del Sol’s game against St. Anthony at 14, but St. Anthony outscored Corona del Sol 22-9 in the second quarter. That left Corona del Sol playing catch-up the rest of the game.
Barcello converted 11 of 15 shots, including 5 of 8 three pointers, to help him finish with a game-high 31 points. But St. Anthony had five players each score in double figures.
National coaching legend Bob Hurley, St. Anthony’s longtime leader, will join us Saturday morning on 98.7 FM to talk about his trip to Arizona and his son, Bobby, Arizona State’s first-year basketball coach.
The show runs from 9-11 a.m.
