Canyon del Oro scored an even 144 to get past Rincon/University (154) and Flowing Wells (216) at the Oro Valley Country Club on Thursday. Trevor Gregoire and Lance Picton paced the Dorados with a 1-under 35. Rincon standout Dallan Graybill also shot a 35.

Canyon del Oro boy’s golf coach John Farbarik retired last year after leading the Dorados for the past 10 years. Farbarik retired with a record of 1,037-314-4 from 2006-2015. Part of those 1,000 plus wins included two state championships and three runner-up finishes. He also had four medalists.

Former Salpointe head volleyball coach and University of Arizona assistant volleyball coach Ryan Call has stepped in to lead the Dorados. A former Southern Arizona Coach of the Year, Call was instrumental in starting boys’ volleyball in Arizona.

Call is also well-acquainted with most of the CDO golfers due to his affiliation with youth sports in the area.

“He’s known most of us for a long time so he knows what we like and what we need,” explained Gregoire. “He’s making sure we compete but also have fun doing it.”

Gregoire has been at the top of the Dorado’s rotation this year along with teammates Picton and Jonathan Walters. Any three can take the lead with Jack Call also pushing for the top spot.

“I hope to always do better and be consistent,” Gregoire added. “I’ve been playing pretty good so far.”

The Rangers are also going with a new coach with the retirement of Mike Boyd. Boyd led Rincon since 2013 and he earned Southern Arizona Coach of the Year honors after guiding his squad to the state playoffs last year.

Former CDO golf standout, local top amateur and local businessman B.J. Workman has filled in for Boyd rather nicely according to senior standout Forrest Green.

Green took up golf as a freshman and dedicated this past summer to working on his game for his final year. He shot a 3-over 39.

“He (Workman) is pretty positive and we are having a lot of fun and that’s really what it’s all about,” Green explained. “Things are going well and I played a lot of tournaments this summer to get ready,” he added.

“We have great chemistry and I think we are going to compete at the Division I state tournament.”

Flowing Wells head coach Jason Brown has been at the helm of the Caballeros since 2002. He has put together a team that has evolved to a more cohesive group when compared to last year according to senior Austin Simonson.

“We are better at helping out our number one this year,” Simonson explained. “It seems we would shoot about 20 strokes behind him last year but this year we are within five or six strokes.”

Picking up the game of golf as an eighth grader, Simonson has obviously seen improvement in his own play. “I’ve taken about 10 to 12 strokes off my game,” Simonson added. “I still need more work but I feel this year will be a whole lot better.”
