Marcos de Niza took the suspense out of Friday’s game early in its 48-21 victory over Seton Catholic.
But the game wasn’t without final minute drama. A couple of Marcos de Niza players prepared to dump water and ice on their unsuspecting coach, Paul Moro, as the final seconds elapsed.
But Moro, in his 33rd year as a head coach, sniffed out the celebratory soaking and stepped away from it. The players still managed to dump some water on Moro.
What he couldn’t escape was the group of players who surrounded him after the game to congratulate Moro for becoming Arizona’s all-time leader in football coaching victories. Moro, 64, earned his 332nd career win, surpassing another Arizona football coaching giant, Vern Friedli.
Nationally, only 22 coaches have more career wins than Moro, according to the record book of the National Federation of State High School Associations.
